Federico Cornelli

Federico Cornelli
Commissioner of the National Commission for Companies and the Stock Exchange (Consob)

Federico Cornelli began his career in the 1990s, working for the Arab Banking Corporation, the largest Arab bank in the Gulf, with offices in Bahrain, Milan and London. He then moved to Mario Sarcinelli’s BNL, first as a corporate banker and later as chief financial analyst, responsible for financial analysis and international client planning, and won the Bloomberg global competition for economists in 2003. He then worked at Consob alongside Lamberto Cardia, as head of financial analysis, managing the Lehman crisis, the subprime crisis and the major stock market transactions of the period.

He then moved to the Italian Cooperative Credit sector, managing the ‘sovereign debt’ crisis as Chief Operating Officer of Federcasse and Director-General of the Institutional Guarantee Fund of the BCC-CR, a member of the ABI’s Executive Committee, whilst also holding a role within the European Association of Cooperative Banks in Brussels, where he secured various regulatory changes to facilitate lending to SMEs and households.
He was subsequently appointed to the Italian Banking Association (ABI), led by Antonio Patuelli, where he managed European operations. In this capacity, he continued his work to fine-tune European banking and financial regulations, including securing a rapid ‘quick fix’ amendment to banking rules to mitigate the crisis caused by Covid, providing immediate support for the real economy in Italy and across Europe as a whole.

The Meloni Government subsequently appointed him Commissioner at Consob, where he worked to bring bonds back to Italy and to revise the Consolidated Law on Finance. Highly regarded in Europe, he has in-depth knowledge of financial markets, the banking sector and European regulation. He represents Consob on the ECB’s ESRB and at the OECD.
Among the honours he has received are: the Villahermosa Bocconi Award and the Paul Harris Fellow award.
He is a 'Knight' and an 'Officer' of the Republic.
